About the Camera

All photographs posted to the site in June 2006 were taken with an HP M22 4MP pocket digital camera. The lens is roughly six mm in focal length, which does not allow for much in the way of anything but close up or wide-angle photography. It has problems focusing in low light. It was a Christmas gift and it is better than no camera at all. A Canon Rebel XT 8 will probably be under my Christmas tree this December.

LANDSCAPES with TRAINS

When not photographing trains, my subject often are sunsets, sunrises, and landscapes. Since the M22 is basically a wide angle camera, I tried to feature both the train and the background landscape in each image in my first photoset. [Note: as of June 11, descriptive and locational information have not yet been added to these pages.]

RUNNING to ALTURAS

On Tuesday, June 6, the Modoc Northern 7780 departed Tulelake for Canby with a load of empty bulkhead flats. The train made it to Canby by early evening without problem. The plan was that the 7780 with drop its load of empties on the Canby main and pick up incoming loads from the MN 1011 on the siding. The 7780 would then return to Tulelake with loads and the 1011 would return to Alturas with empties.

Engine problems on the 7780 scuttled that plan and the 1011 ended up taking half of the loads through to Tulelake. On Wednesday, the 7780 was brought back to life and brought the empties into Alturas Yard.
