Graybeard's Great Modoc Northern Odyssey

Modoc Northern Notes, part 1

Here is my understanding of the current Modoc Northern schedule:

MONDAY...Tulelake to Klamath Falls and return

TUESDAY...Tulelake to Alturas and return

WEDNESDAY...Tulelake to Klamath Falls and return (7780)
WEDNESDAY...Alturas to Lakeview and return if possible same day (1011)

THURSDAY...Tulelake to Alturas and return

During my visit June 5-7, the 7780 ran to Canby and then waited for the 1011 to arrive from Alturas with perlite and plywood loads. 7780 was running only with empties. The 1011 arrived around seven p.m. or so and was to double up with the 7780 to get the loads up the hill to the Ambrose siding. It was expected to take at least a double run at the hill to get this accomplished. The first run went okay but at the start of the second run, the 7780 had engine problems. Then the 1011 started acting up and would not fully load. After several hours and lots of experts, the 7780, the plywood, and the caboose were tied down for the night and the 1011 returned light to Ambrose, picked the loads there and headed home for Tulelake.

Nobody's perfect.
