SOUTHERN PACIFIC ONCE RULED

NEW RAIL ACTIVITY IN CHICO?

Imagine going out for your daily walk along the tracks and suddenly seeing a line of survey stakes that gradually shifts toward the tracks? Makes one think of a spur line to come, doesn't it? Mighty peculiar, momma!

That is the scene I encountered on Friday, April 11th as I wandered along the Union Pacific Valley Sub in Chico CA. The view above is looking south toward Hegan Lane. The track to the far right is the main; out of view to its right is the south end of the Chico Siding. The south switch for the siding is MP 182.0.

The view below is from the same location but looking toward the north.

The land in this photo is being partially used for irrigated agriculture; the rest is mostly vacant, with one exception which is the topic of today's edition. A reoccuring thought was that this entire could be the start of a new rail-served industrial park. The last rail-served industrial area in Chico was near the Chico Airport and the rail provided was the Sacramento Northern Railroad!
